Western Region Meetings (1980 – 1998)

1980The 1980 Regional Meeting was held near Lake Isabella, at Uffert Regional Park, and hosted by the Sierra Mojave Grotto, August 30 – September 1. Approximately 40 cavers attended the meeting.
1981The Diablo Grotto hosted a SpeleoEducation Seminar on February 14 – 16, 1981. At the spring meeting, it was decided that Kathy Williams and Peri Frantz would head a region committee to deal with cave rescues. Bill Liebman was elected region Vice Chair, as Bill Frantz stepped down from the position. Ken Laidlaw became the cave rescue liason with the California Office of Emergency Services.On Labor Day Weekend in 1981 (September 4 – 7), the grotto hosted a Western Region Meeting at Cave City Cave with 225 cavers in attendance. Highlights included the frog jumping competition and the pig roast.
1982On September 4 – 6, 1982, the Stanislaus Grotto hosted the regional at Avery Ranch, in the Mother Lode area. Liz Harter was elected region Vice Chair for the next two years
1983The Southern California Grotto hosted a SpeleoEducation Seminar at the Montrose Scout House in La Cresenta. In conjunction with this event, a Western Region Business Meeting was held on February 19, 1983. The theme for the event was California Spans the Globe; 120 cavers attended.Salt Creek Campground, at Shasta Lake, was the site for the Regional Meeting on September 3 – 5, 1983. Liz Harter and Russ Harter attended.
1984In 1984, the meeting was held at Lava Beds National Monument and sponsored by the Willamette Valley Grotto. Bob Richards was elected Vice Chair of the region.
1985A SpeleoEducation Seminar was sponsored by the San Francisco Bay Chapter on February 16 – 18, 1985.The Black Oak Campground at Edison Lake was the site for the 1985 Western Region Meeting on Labor Day Weekend which was sponsored by the Diablo Grotto.
1986In 1986, The Golden Gate Grotto hosted the regional meeting from August 29 to September 1, at Battery Alexander at the Golden State Recreation Area. Hugh Blanchard and Bill Stewart attended. Hugh Blanchard was elected Vice Chair of the region for the next two years.
1987On September 5 – 7, 1987, the Mother Lode Grotto sponsored the meeting at the Fir Campground in Sequoia National Park. About 120 cavers attended the regional.
1988Hutchins Meadow Group Campground, at Buck’s Lake, in the Plumas National Forest, near Quincy, was the site of the September 2 – 4, 1988 Western Region Meeting. Sponsored by the San Francisco Bay Chapter, about 61 cavers attended the event. Hugh Blanchard and Dell Quick made the 500 mile journey to the meeting. At the Business Meeting it was decided to allow grottos to host the Western Region Meeting on any fall weekend, instead of restricting the event to Labor Day. Also, region dues were increased to $2.00 for NSS Members and $4.00 for non NSS Members. Hugh Blanchard was re-elected region Vice Chair for the next two years.
1989A SpeleoEducation seminar was sponsored by the Diablo Grotto during Memorial Day weekend, 1989 at Berkeley Tuolumne Camp. Approximately 175 cavers were present for the seminar.October 7 – 9, 1989, marked the Western Region Meeting at Quaking Aspens Campground in Sequoia National Park. This Event was sponsored by the Southern California Grotto and featured a Mexican Banquet and fiesta on Saturday night. A guidebook was prepared with maps and descriptions of local caves and Linda Heslop designed the logo for the shirts. Region dues were raised to $5.00 with a subscription to the California Caver being lowered from $7.00 to $6.00.
1990In 1990, the Western Region Meeting was held during the NSS Convention in Yreka due to the proximity of those already in attendance.
1991The Shasta Area Grotto sponsored the regional meeting on July 27 – 29, 1991 at the Harris Springs Campground.
1992On September 25 – 27, 1992, the Stanislaus Speleological Association hosted the regional at Berkeley Tuolumne Camp.
1993In 1993, the Western Region meeting was held during the Pendelton, Oregon NSS Convention.
1994The Diablo Grotto sponsored the Western Region Meeting on September 17 – 18, 1994, and many grotto members attended the event held at the Buckeye Flat Campground in Sequoia National Park. At the Business Meeting, Lynn Fielding volunteered to be a guest editor of the California Caver.
1995The Willamette Valley Grotto hosted the regional meeting on October 6 – 9, 1995 at Lava Beds National Monument.
1996On September 21 – 23, 1996, the Mother Lode Grotto hosted the Western Region Meeting at Berkeley Tuolumne Camp. The Western Region Training Committee became an official committee of the Western Region. Lynn Fielding was elected chair of the Western Region. Marianne Russo was elected as Vice Chair; with Peri Frantz continuing to serve as Secretary – Treasurer.
1997Avery Ranch was the setting for the October 24 – 26, 1997 Western Region Meeting Sponsored by the San Francisco Bay Chapter.
1998The San Diego Grotto was the host for the 1998 Western Region Meeting on October 9 – 11, 1998 at Camp Marston, near Julian, California. Lynn Fielding was re-elected region chair; with Marianne Russo continuing as Vice Chair and Peri Frantz remaining as Secretary – Treasurer.
